
Domain name identifies one or more than one IP addresses. Like domain name yahoo.com stand for dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to recognize particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.google.com/index.html, the domain name is google.com.
Each domain name has a suffix that point to top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a restricted number of such domains. For example:
.gov - Government institutes
.edu - Educational organizations
.org - Organizational groups
.mil - Military
.com - commercial industry
.net - Network association
.in - India
.au - Australia
The Internet is based on IP addresses and each Web server need a Domain Name System (DNS) server to interpret domain names into IP addresses.
A domain name establish an association or other unit on the Internet. For example, the domain name
www.name.cc locates an Internet address for "name.cc" at Internet point 199.168.1.1 and a particular host server named "www". The "com" component of the domain name shows the activity perform by the association or unit and is called the top-level domain name. The "name" part of the domain name describes the association or unit and jointly with the top-level is called the second-level domain name. The second-level domain name maps to and can be considering as the "readable" description of the Internet address.
